4 Different Reasons To Seek Diff Repairs/Service For Your Vehicle

Although it's not recognised much, the diff is a vital part of any given vehicle. It completes the drivetrain by converting torque from the engine and transmission to the wheels. In addition to that, it regulates the power that goes to each of the drive wheels so as to allow better cornering and to prolong tyre life. There are four main reasons why you might want to have your diff checked. Check them out below.

Normal service

Under normal conditions, every vehicle should have its diff serviced at least once a year. This service seeks to ensure that the diff does not wear out prematurely due to friction and wearing of its internal gears. A normal diff service entails changing the lube by installing a fresh top up. It also involves checking for leaks and changing the seals when worn. It's a relatively easy procedure that goes a long way in protecting your diff from costly repairs or rebuilds.

Repairs and rebuilds

If your car's diff is not serviced regularly or if your car is exposed to tough driving conditions, the diff could get in bad shape. When damaged, the diff will make noises and cornering will be difficult. For minor damage, a repair entailing change of fluid, bearings, and seals might suffice. However, if the damage is extensive, a rebuild is required. Here, the diff is opened and all the components are taken apart. The diff is then reassembled with worn parts having been replaced and the gears recalibrated.

Speed ratio customisation

One can also seek work on the diff if they wish to have their drivetrain customised for performance. Because the diff determines the rate at which the drive wheels turn, it can be adjusted to increase or decrease the speed of the wheels in relation to the engine. That said, a speed ratio adjustment is common among racing cars that are looking to gain extra speed or achieve better handling around corners.

Off-road diff service

One can also seek a special diff service if they wish to have their 4WD vehicle prepped for challenging driving off the road. Normally, apart from a normal diff service, 4X4 vehicles also get what is called a diff lock adjustment. This adjustment basically disables the diff temporarily to allow all drive wheels to turn at the same rate. This service helps the vehicle to get unstuck when one of the wheels is trapped in rocks, mud or sand.

If you haven't had your diff serviced or you detect that your vehicle may be experiencing problems, take it to diff experts.

About Me

Auto Electrical Faults

Yo! Welcome to my new blog. My name is Tim and I live in downtown Brisbane with my friends. I recently left school and got a job which allowed me to save up for my very first car. Man, I love it. I have always dreamt of owning a car. I didn't have lots of cash so I had to buy a pretty cheap car. Because my car is so old, it has had one or two problems. The biggest issue was with the electrical system. The windows wouldn't open, the headlights were dim and sometimes the car wouldn't start. Thankfully, I found a great auto service company who fixed all the problems for me. I learnt a lot from the mechanics there so I decided to start this blog.
